2018 November election results

The so-called “Blue Wave” in Illinois didn’t seem to touch Madison County that much. Below are some of the highlights of the November 2018 Election results:

-The Granite City area saw its first Republican county board member in several years with the election of Republican contractor John “Eric” Foster over Democrat Art Asadorian, in District 21.

-The Democrats took back District 13 (East Alton) as Democrat Matthew King edged Republican James Futrell by 66 votes.

County-wide races:

-Republican appointed Treasurer Chris Slusser won election over Democrat Chris Miller.

-Incumbent Democrat County Clerk Debbie Ming-Mendoza defeated Republican challenger Stephen Adler.

-Republican Rob Werden defeated Democrat Andrew Reinking for the office of Regional Superintendent of Schools. This office was held by Democrat Robert Daiber, who decided not to run for re-election. This office has been occupied by Democrats for as long as anyone can remember.

-Incumbent Democrat Sheriff John Lakin ran unopposed

-Appointed Circuit Judge Republican David Dugan won election over Democrat Marc Parker for Circuit Judge.

-In another Circuit Judge contest, Associate Judge Democrat Sarah Smith defeated Republican Mark Rabe.

-Appointed Appellate Judge Republican David Overstreet was elected Appellate Judge over Democrat Kevin Hoerner.

-Chief Judge David Hylla and Circuit Judge Kyle Napp, both Democrats, were retained by the voters.

-Voters decided to eliminate the elected office of Recorder and consolidate this office under the authority of the County Clerk. This has been done successfully in other Illinois counties.

-On the advisory question of “SHALL MADISON COUNTY BECOME A SANCTUARY COUNTY FOR LAW ABIDING GUN OWNERS TO PROTECT THEM FROM UNCONSTITUTIONAL GUN LAWS PASSED BY THE ILLINOIS GENERAL ASSEMBLY?”, the vote was 2 to 1 YES.

-On the advisory question of “SHALL ALL UNITS OF GOVERNMENTS WITHIN MADISON COUNTY FIRST SEEK APPROVAL FROM THE VOTERS BY ADVISORY REFERENDUM BEFORE INCURRING ANY BOND DEBT?”, the vote was about 9 to 1 YES.

-Voters in the Collinsville Area Recreational District voted about 5 to 1 to dissolve the district.

-Godfrey township voters decided to dissolve the township.

-Alton township voters decided NOT to dissolve the township.

-Fosterburg Water District voters decided to have an elected board.

In major General Assembly races:

-Republican Jason Plummer was elected in Illinois State Senate District 54 (Republican Kyle McCarter did not seek a third term).

-Incumbent Republican State Rep Charlie Meier ran unopposed.

-Incumbent Democrat State Rep Katie Stuart defeated former State Rep Republican Dwight Kay.

-Democrat Rachelle Aud Crowe defeated Edwardsville Mayor Hal Patton for State Senate District 56. (Former State Senator Bill Haine did not run for re-election)

-Incumbent Democrat State Rep Jay Hoffman defeated Republican Doug Jameson.

-At the close of voting, Democrat appointed State Rep Monica Bristow had about a 300 vote lead over Republican Mike Babcock.

-Incumbent Republican Governor Bruce Rauner lost to Democrat JB Pritzker.

-Republican Erika Harold lost to Democrat Kwame Raoul for Attorney General.

-Incumbent Republican Congressmen Bost, Davis and Shimkus all won re-election.
